As a military family, the question of where to establish your forever home after 20 something years of service isn’t an easy task and isn’t just about picking a location—it’s finding a place to truly call home. My hubby and I struggled with this tough choice, a part of the complicated tale of service, sacrifice, and the pursuit of stability that makes up military life. From dealing with cultural barriers to missing a feeling of belonging, My story is full of emotion and depth, just like the path many others walk as foreign-born military spouses.

The Art of the “Forever” Relocation List

Relocating as a military family isn’t just a one-time thing; it’s a whole lifestyle. For us, finding a new home was like following a compass that mixes practicality with the exciting possibilities ahead. Here were our top priorities when choosing a new place to call home:

  1. Adventure Nearby: As a military family, we love adventures – whether it’s a peaceful hike in the hills or an action-packed ski getaway. It’s all about sprinkling a bit of fun into our family’s daily routine. So, a new home close to these natural hideaways was a must for us.
  2. Schools and Safety First: When you’re a parent, every street could be a playground, every neighbor a watchful eye. We treasure education and safety wholeheartedly, making sure they’re always close by in our house-hunting journey.
  3. Staying True to our Values: The personal values that tug at your heartstrings should resonate with the state you choose to live in. To us, a calm spot that reflects the important values our family cherishes was really important.
  4. Assessing the cost of living: This one is very important as well if you want to be financially aware and safe in your forever home.
  5. The importance of community: Considering communities with a strong military presence or support network is another point that we look at when deciding where to move. Life in the military but also outside of it is easier with people that are going through or have been through the same thing as you.

Finding our Forever Home

After researching and visiting multiple states, we finally found our forever home in the beautiful state of California. The stunning nature views, fantastic school district, and welcoming community ticked all our boxes. We’re so grateful to have found a place that truly feels like home and allows us to continue living out our great adventure.

We did find a compromise as we were not quite ready to leave the military lifestyle yet.

Remember: your mission may have ended, but the adventure of your new life is just beginning.
